App blockers: five kinds of friction, compared

Blockers don't work by locking you out — you own the phone; you can always get back in. They work by inserting a pause where a reflex used to be. Pick by mechanism, not brand.

A setup that works for most people

  1. Delete one app — the single worst offender. Today.
  2. Pause the rest: a breathing-pause blocker on every feed app.
  3. Fence the evening: one schedule, 9 pm to 7 am, covering feeds and news.
  4. Only if the above keeps failing: pay for a physical key and treat it like your house key.

Why friction beats willpower

Willpower is a budget that empties by evening — precisely when feeds are most tempting. Friction doesn't tire. A three-second pause is trivial once and decisive across the hundred-odd times a day a hand drifts toward a phone. Design the environment; stop re-fighting the same battle.

Works even better on a gray screen: set that up first — it takes two minutes. Parents: put the schedule mechanism into a signed family agreement so it isn't one adult against the wifi.
