Dumbphones in 2026: an honest guide

A dumbphone is not nostalgia — it's outsourcing discipline to hardware. The phone can't scroll, so you don't. Before spending money, read what actually breaks.

What breaks when you go dumb

The pattern that works is dumbphone in the pocket, smartphone in the drawer — the internet becomes a place you visit, not a place you live.

The current honest options

DeviceBallparkCharacter
Light Phone III$$$ The design icon: matte OLED, camera, maps and music but no feeds, no browser, no app store. The most livable full commitment.
Punkt MP02$$ Calls and texts, beautifully machined, aggressively nothing else. Signal-via-companion tricks exist but fight its nature.
Mudita Kompakt$$ E-ink minimal phone with maps, music and messages on a paper-like screen — the calmest display of the group.
HMD / Nokia flip phones (2660, 2780 & kin)$ The cheap experiment: under a hundred dollars to find out if you can live SMS-first. KaiOS quirks included.
Minimal Phone$$ E-ink with a physical QWERTY — for people whose job lives in email but whose evenings die in feeds.

$ = under ~$100 · $$ = a few hundred · $$$ = flagship-lite money. Links are to the makers; prices and availability move — check before ordering. No affiliate relationships at publication (disclosure policy).

Try before you buy: the $0 dumbphone

Fake it on your current phone for two weeks: delete every feed and browser you can, gray the screen, home screen reduced to phone / messages / camera / maps, notifications to calls-and-texts only. If two weeks of that feels like relief rather than loss, the hardware version will suit you. If it feels like prison, spend your money on friction instead — cheaper, adjustable, reversible.

Either way, run the habit test before and after. Numbers make the decision honest.
